How to Stop Your Nursing Application from Getting "Ghosted"
Author: Liam Caswell Date Posted:2 September 2024
"I can't believe I just got ghosted again!"
There I was, sitting at my desk, coffee in hand, ready to conquer the world (or at least nail this nursing job application).
I’d found the perfect role—it was everything I’d been looking for, and I knew I had the skills and experience to ace it. #verymindfullyconfident
So, whilst my partner went off to the beach #jealous, I (reluctantly)committed to spending a beautiful summer's day meticulously crafting my CV, pouring my heart into the cover letter, and tailoring every single word in the selection criteria.
By the end of a full day spent writing, I was exhausted but satisfied.
I hit ‘send,’ leaned back in my chair, and waited.
And waited. #veryrespectful
And waited some more.
First things first, you’ve got to think of yourself as a brand. I know, it sounds a bit corporate, but stick with me. Your CV, cover letter, and selection criteria are like your personal marketing materials. They need to scream, "Hey, I’m amazing, and you need me on your team!" Start with a personal statement that’s not just a summary of your experience but a bold declaration of who you are as a nurse and what makes you unique. Think of it as your professional tagline, tailored to the role!
2. Make Your Content Pop
You’ve heard the saying, “Content is king/queen,” right? Well, it applies to your job applications too. Employers and recruiters are busy, so you must grab their attention quickly. Think about how quickly you scroll past something that doesn't catch your eye on TikTok; you have seconds to make an impression on the hiring manager. Use clear, punchy language and focus on your achievements. Instead of saying, "I provided patient care," try something like, "I delivered patient care that enhanced patient experience, resulting in a positive review left of my care to the NUM." Numbers and results are your friends—use them where you can!
3. Learn to Be Your Own Cheerleader
I know, I know—selling yourself can feel a bit awkward, but it’s absolutely necessary. When you find the sweet spot between overselling and underselling, you can move mountains confidently. You’ve got to be your own cheerleader in this game. Don’t just list your duties; talk about the impact you’ve made. Use strong, confident language. Instead of saying, "I was part of a team that improved patient outcomes," go with, "I led a team that improved patient outcomes by implementing new care protocols." See the difference? It’s all about showing that you’re not just any nurse—you’re THE nurse they need!
4. Tailor Your Application Like a Custom-Made Set of #eNurse scrubs
One-size-fits-all is a myth—especially when it comes to job applications. Each role is different, so your application should be too. Take the time to research the employer, understand their values, and tailor your CV, cover letter, and selection criteria to match what they’re looking for. Yes, it takes more time, but trust me, it’s worth it. It’s the difference between getting ghosted and getting that call. Remember, your Applications are your brand; organisations want to see a beautiful suite of well-curated application documents, not a hot mess express pile of documents that look like three different people have designed them! Branding is everything. Managers like pretty applications that are aesthetically pleasing - they are human after all!
5. Network Like a Pro
Let’s be real—sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know. Networking can give your application the edge it needs. Let your network know you’re on the lookout for new opportunities, and don’t be shy about reaching out for informational interviews. This shows
you’re not just a nurse; you’re an engaged, proactive member of the profession. Many of my jobs have come from telling people in my network, that I was looking for a role and
